One of the most important factors to consider when thinking about settling down in any city or town is the educational opportunities and school selection. Port Coquitlam is a great choice for young families or couples who are thinking about starting a family as it boasts one of the most innovative and largest school districts in the province. In addition to a large selection of public school settings, Port Coquitlam offers many programs and private school opportunities as well. School District No. 43
Port Coquitlam is part of the Coquitlam school district which serves the tri-cities area of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. It is the third largest school district in the province and provides education for over 200 000 students. Port Coquitlam itself houses fourteen elementary schools (Kindergarten-grade 5), five middle schools (grades 6-8) and two high schools (grades 9-12).
The mission statement of the Coquitlam school district is that it strives to ensure learning opportunities for all students. The objectives of the school district in accordance with fulfilling its mission statement are to improve literacy rates for all students from K-12, improve numeracy rates for all students from K-12, improve graduation and completion rates and finally, to improve all students’ safety and sense of belonging. The overall graduation and completion rate of the district is one of the highest in the province at 91.9%.
The city of Port Coquitlam is working closely with the school district to help fulfill the board’s safety objective. It is working on improving the walkability and safety of all routes to and from every one of their elementary schools. This partnership and the board’s commitment to its students’ safety is another reason as to why Port Coquitlam is such a coveted place to live for young families.
School District # 43 offers many unique programs to ensure a diverse and complete educational experience. The district offers two different French immersion choices (early – Kindergarten or Grade 1 and late – Grade 6) which comprises of over 10% of the districts’ students.
Besides French immersion, the district offers a comprehensive English as an Additional Language program. This program is “designed to assist students to become proficient in English, to develop them intellectually and as citizens, and to enable to achieve the expected learning outcomes of the provincial curricula.”
School District # 43 offers an international baccalaureate or IB program for high school students. This program is designed to challenge highly motivated and talented students and offers courses in English, French, Social Studies, Math and Science. The IB program is recognized as the equivalent of first year university courses and can receive university credits for completion of IB subjects.

Port Coquitlam is also home to some of the more prestigious private schools in the lower mainland. These schools provide an alternative to the public school setting and really round out the city’s educational choices. There are three private elementary schools in the city and one private high school.
Port Coquitlam does not offer any post-secondary schooling; however, it is very close to Simon Fraser University which is located in neighbouring Burnaby (10 km) or Douglas College (2 km). The University of British Columbia (40 km) and BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology – 25 km) are both viable options for students commuting from Port Coquitlam.
Port Coquitlam’s commitment to education and its outstanding school district make it a great option for anyone with school aged kids. Most elementary schools are conveniently located and within walking distance from the friendly neighbourhoods of the city. Homes are still affordable in Port Coquitlam and with so many different housing opportunities, Port Coquitlam makes a great place to raise a family.
